A Quick Guide to Concert Etiquette
First time at Carnegie Hall? Or looking for a quick refresher? Either way, we’re here to help. Before the house lights fade and the orchestra begins to tune, here’s what you need to know to make your concert experience—and your neighbor’s—truly unforgettable.
- Please turn off your cell phones, beeping watches, and anything else that might disturb others.
- Refrain from taking pictures inside Carnegie Hall during a performance. Video or sound recording is prohibited at all times.
- Help yourself to the free Ricola cough drops before the concert, and remember to unwrap one (or a few!) before the music starts.
- Tapping, humming, and singing along can be fun—but not necessarily for the person sitting next to you.
- Carnegie Hall has no specific dress code—the most important thing is that you are comfortable.
- If you are unsure about when to applaud, a good rule of thumb is to follow the lead of other audience members.

We want you to experience the music to its fullest, whether you are making your Carnegie Hall debut or enjoying a welcome return. Enjoy the concert!
